Style the property in keeping with the period of the property eg mid century modern, modern Victorian, cool contemporary. By using the period of the property as a starting point, you’re already on your way to creating a unique Airbnb that stands out in a crowd. You don’t have to go full on and make it a themed Airbnb (unless you want to) – you don’t want it to be a museum – but by adding in some details you’ll be able to create a characterful Airbnb property.

Choose statement pieces of furniture. Get thrifty – you can find amazing pieces in thrift stores so you don’t need to spend a lot. By mixing and matching your furniture you can create a unique home that your guests will love to stay in.

Add local touches. If your property is by the coast, bring in some of the natural elements such as driftwood, light colours and beach finds. Use artwork from local artists as focal points, and to brighten up a space.

On that note, bear in mind the location of your property. If your property is in a city centre, there’s no point offering complimentary beach towels to your guests!

Keep your Airbnb clutter free. Your guests want to feel calm and relaxed, not overwhelmed with too much stuff everywhere.

Don’t have too many personal items around the property. Whilst some guests might like to get to know their host, many won’t want to see tons of family photos and your kids craft projects. You don’t want your guests to feel uncomfortable and as though they’re invading your personal space! Keep it comfortable and neutral so they feel at home.

Keep flooring neutral and easy to clean, especially if you allow pets. Having carpet might be great underfoot but it’s tricky to keep clean and fresh. Opting for wood floors and large rugs can give the feeling of warmth whilst being easier to clean.

If you have outside space, make it a useable space for your guests. Use durable furniture and keep the area clean and tidy. If you’re not green fingered, either employ a gardener or use low maintenance plants and materials.

Think about your ideal client, and design your short term rental with them in mind. By creating a client avatar, you will be able to provide all the things your client needs. If your ideal guests are families, be sure to include lots of kid friendly items and durable furnishings. If you plan to attract business users, ensure you have a dedicated workspace and good wifi. For a couples retreat, a cosy deck area or balcony to sit on an evening may be something to consider.

Add in thoughtful touches, like a coat stand in the hallway or blankets on the deck for those chilly nights.

If you have a small space, make the most of it! Create a cosy reading nook or music space your guests won’t want to leave.

See what is working with other popular Airbnbs. What do they do to make them so special? Perhaps it’s a unique property full of charm. Perhaps it’s the host going the extra mile and providing extra value or welcome gifts for their guests. You can use this research to influence your own Airbnb experience.

Use house plants to soften the space, but do your research before investing. Choose varieties which are happy with a bit of neglect and aren’t too needy – you can’t expect your guests to become gardeners for you. Rubber plants and snake plants are good choices. If your property accepts pets and kids, be sure to choose non toxic house plants that won’t cause harm.

I hope these interior design tips for Airbnbs will help you create a unique Airbnb experience for your guests.
