In Minnesota, we love tradition. For many of us, tradition involves spending our summer weekends with family at the lake home or cabin. Summer is short and winters are long and we certainly do our best to not take it for granted.
For this family of six, they built a getaway home for exactly that. Jeanie, the on-the-go, fashion-forward mother of four came to me with her house plan and an idea of the aesthetic she was going for. She knew she wanted to keep it simple and modern with concrete floors but still have traditional wood walls, but in a subtle way. White-washed pine was installed throughout the entire home making the perfect canvas to complement each and every layer going into the design. The cabinets were the first layer and a dark charcoal grey was what she had in mind. It needed to be rich, yet earthy. Shaker style doors and drawers with inset styling give this kitchen the timeless yet modern style. Granite and quartz countertops pair with a mini mosaic herringbone backsplash in travertine to add warmth, texture and natural stone to the design. Solid brass pulls in a vintage gold add an extra touch of warmth. As with the majority of projects, there were challenges. Since this new construction home was built slab on grade, the plumbing and electrical were already set when jeanie came to me with her blueprint. We had to stay close to the original layout, shifting things ever-so-slightly. Her must-haves were a pot-filler as well as a water line to her refrigerator. With the only plumbing being at the sink, we used a toe kick on the back side of the cabinets to make it easier for the plumber to install the water lines.
Double sink basins in addition to a drain board and an oversized faucet from kohler stand up to the expansive windows that hover. As with vaulted ceilings, recessed lighting doesn't reach the work surfaces so under cabinet lighting is crucial for task lighting. With floating shelves, the installer at minnesota cabinets retrofitted led lighting strips and their wires into them, making them visually disappear.
The second challenge was the grandiose aspect of the space. With a 10' dining room table that needed to be centered in the room, she sacrificed for a smaller island. An 18' ceiling peak makes for a tall kitchen and custom 10' high cabinets fill in space above, making everything feel proportionate.
Other challenges included functionality and storage needs. With the refrigerator sitting where it is; there was not a drop zone besides the island, so a pull-out table was added. Jeanie also needed a place to store a broom and a collapsible ladder. By creating a functional door on the side of the cabinet and installing a panel inside, we were able to gain 2-3" that allow her to store these items.
